Friday 18 Sep 2015 17:21

Chamonix 1050m

A long way down from Flegere but very pleasant and better paths the the path to Les Houches .

Todays Mission complete 11m 1200m up and 1400m down

More sun would have been nice but hey ho what a walk , great company .

Thanks to Paul , Gary , Lo-Anne and Clare for bashing out those miles .

Friday 18 Sep 2015 15:15

La Flegere

Memories of last years prison camp.

The cable car stopped in August do it was either a walk to Planplaz for a cable or walk down .

Friday 18 Sep 2015 12:39

Lac Blanc 2352m Sadly a no view Lac Blanc , but a wonderful place run by people of Nepal . The cook also worked as a guide in a nice photo of Gary and Kissan together .

Thursday 17 Sep 2015 15:20

Argentiere 11miles and 1100m up and then down 1150m

From the top the rain got heavier and the wind stronger . It was a long way down and much to wet to stop and eat lunch .

I can't recall as many wet days and only my feet remained dry .

One thing in the wet is that you just march on . So a nice 2.20pm finish with the challenge of drying the gear the only problem. The hotel has one of the best boot drying facilities I've seen and they aren't wet !! At least they will be warm in the morning.

At the hotel I talked to another group who went to the cable car station above LeTour and it wasn't working for the high winds .

Thursday 17 Sep 2015 12:31

Aiguiletta des Posettes

The 2 groups that had sort of joined together decided to go for the high option .

Despite no views it still provided a different day for me and more of a mountain walk.

2201m after 200m down its a case of 230m up.

Thursday 17 Sep 2015 10:40

Col De Balme French border and a good climb to get here 900m over 4 miles and it's only 10.40am.

Sadly the day has turned poor and the visibility is almost zero. Not sure if we go for the high road or low road. Maybe even the bus from Le Tour .

Wednesday 16 Sep 2015 16:05

Trient - day 07 - 10.5m 800m ascent

Another good day .. A hot dry end and a pleasant walk walk down the hill to our bed .

The Grand Ouse is a lovely spot , we have a private room but shared facilities.

Paul was kind to the guys , he had a pooh in the ladies and then realised?? And had a shower in the smell free gents ...

First mistake , I sent the baggage to the hotel next door .

Wednesday 16 Sep 2015 14:58

Col De La Forclaz (1526m)

Almost days work done so time to grab a beer ... A mixed bag of weather with the rain but not too bad . The rain coat was in 6 times today .

Sitting having a beer in the sunshine after a tough climb is a delight.

Wednesday 16 Sep 2015 12:10

Bovine ... A good mornings work 750m up to the refuge which was now closed for the season .

Tuesday 15 Sep 2015 14:39

TMB 06 - Champex 10miles 450m

The easier day of the trek so all done by 2.15 pm .

A nice 7 mile downhill following the river to the roadside cafe which was closed so we ate picnic on the terrace .

Then it's the up of the day 1500ft to the town of Champex and the Splendid hotel .

Monday 14 Sep 2015 17:34

La Fouly(CH) Hotel L’Edelweisse

Day 5 and 13 miles with 1000m up and 1500m down. The down was non too bad as the views were a delight , as too was lunch at La Pouley , a cafe attached to a farm the served me a local fish "Crute" A fantastic creation of bread , cheese(made on the farm ) ham tomato egg white wine .. An absolute delight - so big I had to drag Gary into help .

La Fouly a lovely village and the only complaint can be the pub closed on Mondays .

Monday 14 Sep 2015 12:09

Col De Ferret 2537m A nice night in Bonnati lights out by 9.30 so a good start in the morning , helped by Paul reading his watch wrong at 5.45

A clear day with excellent views allowed me to see what I had missed last year .

After just over 2 hours we reached refuge Elena which closed yesterday. So it was up to the Col a climb of 800m (2700ft) .

The weather turned nasty for a while but not enough to spoil the views. The views from the top were to die for . Made it worth coming back for . The temperature was 6c up from -1c last year .

Noon and the hard work was over, no more up .

Sunday 13 Sep 2015 16:41

Refuge Bonatti 2025m

After the big climb to refuge Bertoni and soaked probably not from the heavy rain but the sweat on getting there . We arrived in the dry.

Bonatti is an excellent refuge and probably the best on the trail . The only shock was paul discovering the showers are limited by one token per person which allows you 20 litres of water !! Not his normal 20 minutes worth , he ended up half washed covered in soap .

Sunday 13 Sep 2015 12:21

Refuge Bertoni 1980m A horrible wet day , a late start as we hung around to watch the start of the Tour De Geant a 330km race that also includes 78,000 foot of vertical ascent .

Bertoni was reached by 12pm which was a good start taking 700m up to get here .

No views whatever just a chance to try out a bit .

Saturday 12 Sep 2015 15:56

Saturday and rest day

To date we have had a mixed bag with both accommodation and weather . The hotel BoutonD'or in Courmayeur for our 2 night stop is winning up to now .

Courmayeur is very quiet and speaking to a barman last night he informed us that everything closes next week . Them for 2 months until the snow arrives . It's a big town so where are the locals I asked . Most property is holiday accommodation so no one lives here he replied .

Despite the poor forecast we made for the new revolving Skyway cable car to Helbronner at 11,371 foot . The cloud lifted as we enjoy a high altitude beer and we decided to take a trip on the 5km cable above the ice to The Aiguille Du Midi

A fantastic experience which I had waited a year for and worth it .

Friday 11 Sep 2015 17:50

Courmayer , Italy (3 days complete)

After the bad start today the sun came out and we marched on but only as far as the bus stop so today was down to 10 mile .

The bus saved us 5 miles and allowed me to miss out the down section in the trees .

Friday 11 Sep 2015 11:03

Refuge Elizabetta

Early lunch at 11am and back for lunch at a place I overnighted last year . The cloud had lifted and It was lovely to see the world from the Col de la Seigneur to Elzabetta .

Posted: Sept. 11, 2015, 9:03 a.m.

Friday 11 Sep 2015 9:40

Col de la Seigneur 2512 m

This is also the border between France and Italy.

Reached the top just after 9.30am over 2000 ft of up and after a late night caused by testing the local plonk with the routes established guides this was not a bad result . Snow had falling during the night and the top showed evidence to that .

Looking back the path from the day before looked a challenge to say the least .

Thursday 10 Sep 2015 17:03

Refuge Mottet

A long day today , 14 mile and 1800m of up but this allowed me to change the stopover points from last year . A strange day that seen suncream in the morning and goretex by the end of day .

The hail continued to well after our arrival . Tonights refuge is excellent (although we have not eaten yet ) a 2 bedded room with shower and toilet ... Luxury

Thursday 10 Sep 2015 14:47

from Refuge Bonhomme and an hour wait for an omelette we retraced our steps to the col and headed for Col des Fours adding a bit more height to reach the highest point of the TMB . I gave this a wide berth last year because of the snow.

As we started the decent we spotted Ibex to add to the Mummuts we had spotted in the morning (nature day )

At bang on 4pm the time our friend Paul was being cremated the heavens opened and it was hail stones . I think he sent them from the pearly gates for us for not being there .RIP Paul .....

Thursday 10 Sep 2015 13:20

Refuge Bonhomme A perfect place for a lunch stop . Busy spot and the Q will give us time for a rest .

The scenery continues to satisfy.

Thursday 10 Sep 2015 12:16

Col Du Bonhomme A good start with 8 miles knocked off and 1000m (4 hrs) the track ahead is clear of snow this year .

Posted: Sept. 10, 2015, 10:16 a.m.

Wednesday 9 Sep 2015 16:56

Day 1 complete 8miles and all done by 4.10pm in 3hrs 40m

After the delayed start (despite my bag having my new Katrina strap attached for easy ID , pleased that didn't get lost ) we cheated a bit to save time and used the cable car which is said to save an hour but it may be a bit more ??

Thinking we were late we pushed on without a stop and happy sitting having a beer by 4.15.

The immediate difference this year is the views .... Can't believe I missed all this last year .

Wednesday 9 Sep 2015 8:29

Well it should have been day 1 but I'm not too sure what's happening as British Airways delay my baggage. It missed the flight but arrived 2 hours later into Geneva and despite a promise that it would arrive last night that has never happened .

Contact number your joking ....

WELL DONE! They journey looks great but, don't get any ideas dad!

You look skinny !! Spoons got word your on way home, shares are up again....Jack is ok I gather but may have a squeaky bark. Just out of dock..
Well done on the walk and a half..

I see the legs are out today! I hope you have not lost that sun hat.

Looks fab and I know the views will be fantastic, rained in dear old Blighty all day and that's without any views, stay safe just read the article about the Avalanche. X

Those kind of conditions sort the men from the boys. Keep it gannan Alec.

The Race you saw. Over 2000 pre entries for this year. It has to be completed in 150 hours.
Just over 200 miles and 78000' of ascent. Did you pick up an entry form for next year?

Can you not get Paul to look more enthusiastic. With that pack of mine and that pose, he is beginning to look like me!!!

Can you stay away longer? I love riding your bike! Doing our route 2mph faster!

Enjoy the walk.

Enjoy the walk Bill I'll be watching you!

BA profits will be taking a hammering when you get back.

Well done, pleased all is well.. Mr Spoons has survived the bad press, up 1p today..

I think BA got distracted as they had one of their planes catch fire yesterday! Hope your stuff arrives pronto as walking needs loads of specialist gear. If your bag turns up back at Newcastle let me know and I'll stick it on my Triumph and pop it over to you. Hopefully you have it now?
