Sleeping Ute Mtn and sunset over the back fence
Laura courtasy and the dance cards up close
Moab folk festival afternoon
Kens Lake for a couple days with friends.
A productive afternoon
Diesel has one of his mice with a feathered tail out. Is putting it in or by my shoes. Pretending to forget about it. Then assaulting the shoes.
Camp and the river
Camp looking inland
Green River SP. blue sky and cottonwoods.
The main hot pools. The one drains now is the hotter.
At Mystic Hot Springs, west of Richfield UT. A busy couple of days. Left Cathedral Gorge yesterday for Cedar City and a recommended vet for Mim. She's had digestive issues similar to mine of a year ago. She's now one a prescription bland diet with probiotics and as much antibiotic as I can fool her into eating with the wet food. This morning into St George to pick up a portable solar panel kit and do liquor and grocery shopping. While I was deciding where to go next I saw Mystic Hot Springs on the map and decided I wanted to soak and a massage tomorrow. I was here at least 20 years ago and it hasn't changed much.
And more info
Info. Zoom in as needed.
The formations that make this Cathedral Gorge. These are small there will be bigger later.
Cathedral Gorge SP, Panaca NV
Ash Spring. Pvt property. One source that makes Pahranagut what it is.
Sunset at Paranagut
Zoom in for wading egrets
Back at Paranagut NWR. I like watching the herons and egrets. And it's free. I feel much better idling about when I'm not paying for a camp site. So bird watching, reading, maybe some painting for a couple days.
RV park for laundry, shower, tank dump, and battery recharge.
I was mistaken. It is the town of Alamo that is dry. I bought wine and beer at a Shell station 8 miles north of town.
Astounding fact for today. There are dry counties in Nevada.
Pahranagat Natl Wildlife Refuge. Driven past many times. Decided to stop until I run out of coffee or propane; both are low.
4 Bighorn rams
A little reflected sunrise glow
Zoom in for more petroglyphs
Atlatal collection. Donated by aficionados
Throwing an atlatal
valley of fire state park. Atlatl CG.
My failure to plan ahead has caught up with me. I wouldn't have guessed that Springdale and the entrance to Zion NP would look like Gatlinburg during fall colors. Every campground is full until after Thanksgiving. Looking for a plan b this evening online. I'm at Snow Canyon SP in their overflow sites hoping for a site tomorrow for a couple of days.
Sandstone capped with lava
Snow Cyn SP near StGeorge
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park near Kanab
Lake Powell near Page AZ
Betatakin sheltered in the alcove
Aspen in the bottom of the canyon
Navajo Natl Monument
Didn't go far today. Just down to Bluff at a commercial RV park. I needed to dump the black tank. And I need a shower.
Twin Rocks Cafe. Note last item on menu - Daddy's favorite
Beautiful harvest moor rise. None of my photos did it justice so I just watched for awhile.
Just got an email from the loan officer that I won't be able to close on the Cortez house until 11/10. I'm disappointed but it also allows me to plan a month for the fourth segment of this journey. Haven't decided yet but likely a loop thru southern and central Utah.
This concludes my "too many photos" morning walkabout of the Ruins Trail
This angle clears up why there two towers instead of one.
Note the structure under the cap of the boulder part way down the slope.
The first tower on this series of photos from the other side of the canyon.
Interesting that this is the only still standing structure in the valley bottom. Wonder if narrowleaf cottonwoods were there in ancient times.
A couple Hovenweep towers from the valley floor
Hovenweep NM. Waiting for the mid-day glare to ease into evening. Then I'll walk around the towers
Dolores River Brewery waiting for the Jon Stickley Trio to start up. Dinner and beer were good.
West Dolores CG. San Juan NF.
Fire Temple & House
Still part of sun complrx
Part of sunset house complex
Square Tower House. Mesa Verde NP
Another day of confusing weather. Is it clearing or gathering for more storms
Woke up to thunder lightening and rain. Hoping it clears and the trails dry some.
Morefield CG. Mesa Verde NP. Started on a short hike but the thunder and lightening were getting closer. Got back just as it started to sprinkle and the thunder sounded like it was on top of me.
Dark skies over the Mancos Vallry
Waiting again while the human foes errands
Think one more will fit up here? Still on Cortez trying to attend to house buying details. Did some bicycle wandering around town because I'm getting restless to finish up and move on, probably to SW Utah.
I'm being watched. Not sure what they're expecting. its been a rainy day. I'm in a Cortez RV park for a couple days for the house inspection and follow up negotiations.
Samewetland. Different angle.
Lime Ck wetland
Overnight temps were predicted low enough to use the camper heating system with the night timer. Pretty nice to get up to a warmed space. I don't think the cats have figured out where the heat is coming from yet because they aren't stretched out over the vents.
Sun and storm. Thunder and lightening.
Transwest Truck & RV on Grand Junction to get the heating system working.
After a lot of internet searching and actually visiting almost a dozen houses, I am now in a contract to buy a house in Cortez CO at 1521 Balsam. All goes well, closing in mid-November and move in around Thanksgiving.
Mim has a new pillow
After looking at many houses on line and about a dozen in person, I made an offer on 1521 Balsam in Cortez.
A little time to check out the arts festival before going to Cortez
It's a good day for dogs. Cascade Creek.
Volunteer day w Joni
Today is my first day looking at houses. We'll visit 10 quickly to narrow the list. Then I do follow up visits with friends to get different perspectives and to keep me getting distracted by a single feature.
In Durango in friends driveway. Tomorrow to Cortez to find a realtor.
New addition to the flanks of the Abajos I used to know
Moab. I think I've finally driven out of smoke.
BLM south of Price and Wellington. 360 view.
Red rocks land mine tailings
Utah irony. Scenic overlook brought to us by Simplot Phosphate
Flaming Gorge Dam
A sunny day but sight distances are less that yesterday when there were scattered storms.
two osprey in nest by the CG. Too far for a good photo
Wind River View CG. View from my site. But no mtns in view.
Pinedale WY. All the civilization you need.
Station Camp CG on the Snake River. It's a small highway-side camp and I'm hoping traffic drops off after dark. Otherwise it will be a noisy night.
Snake River with smoke
A detour to see if a friend living in Jackson Wy is home.
Today starts the third leg of my travels as I head south to Cortez CO.
Smoke does make good sunsets
Orange moon rising
Sleeping Giant Mtn
Parked in Linda and Ilana's front yard. More smoke here than in Billings
Bid smoky sky Montana
What we did with our weekend. 17 done plus a couple still curing.
Billings Farmers Market
Still on Billings MT. Lots of smoke from fires mostly to the north. Spent the day tie dying Tshirts. Nancy has temporarily silenced her inner critic. I think mine just got bored and checked out.
The Indian Menorial
Little Bighorn Battlefield. Imagine fighting in this terrain
In Nancy's driveway
Green Valley CG in Glendive MT
Badlands overlook TR South Unit visitors center
I'm not in the east. T Roosevelt NP North Unit
North Dakota west of Minot. Surprised how many wetland ponds there are.
Surrey City RV park. Time to go back to driving on the top 3/4 of the gas tank. Spaced out thru one small town, found the next towns gas station closed, and worried to the next one with the gage on E and a gallon to spare.
Country got really flat after Bemidji
The original Paul Bunyan
Norway Lake Rec Area - Cass Lake CG
Nice museum. Video of the last local log run down a river. Old photos.
I must confess that I am mostly done with cute/quaint lakeside towns and villages. Tomorrow I'm going to start making mileage to Montana. I will stop for weird.
Decoration gone wild
Ferry on the other direction
Madeline Island is the biggest of the Apostle Islands and is not federally owned. A combination of private, state, and maybe tribal.
Part of Bayfield from the ferry
On the ferry
At the ferry terminal waiting for the next one to Madeline Island. Sign in Ojibwe + English
Not even the rattle of the treat bag moved him this morning.
I know it seems old fashioned - I like to see my flag, the USA flag rippling in the breeze.
This has been a day when it's nice not to have fixed plans. I went to Bayfield WI with the idea of taking one of the evening motor cruises around the Apostle Islands. While I was waiting to board a two-masted boat came in to dock. They were running 3 hour sails but were full for this evening. After talking to one of the owner-operators we had a plan for tomorrow. I'll take the ferry to Madeline Island in the morning, explore there ( shops, museum, etc) and return to do the evening sail tomorrow. I'm now in the Washburn Memorial CG.
Lovely carving on the City hall entry
Ashland City Hall. Beautiful building.
Ontonagon county park on Lake Gogebic.
Another for Jacob
Aliens have landed
Lakenenland Sculpture Park. Bet Jacob would like this guy.
Returned despite the stiff headwind. No photos on the way back.
An improved photo from today's trip
Two kitties on the cupboard
Munising KOA. This must be the place. Most campgrounds are full. I got one of the last spaces here again today. Wanted to be close to town for 8am checkin tomorrow and to have time to settle the cats before the tour. Don't want to be THAT person that slows things down.
Au Sable info. The original bldg attached to the light housed a keeper and assistant with one living upstairs and one down. The other house (now the museum) was added when a fog horn (hand cranked originally) was added. When the living quarters were decommissioned in the late 1950s all the furnishings were just tossed in the lake. The downstairs is furnished in approximately early 1900s with donations. The spiral stairs to the top of the light remind me of how big my feet seem and that I don't want spiral stairs in my next house.
Primary keepers house I'm later years

166 stair steps from the bottom of the falls to near the top

Lake Superior Brewing. Fish tacos and ESB (2 actually)
Pickle Barrel House.

Grand Marais harbor
Grey windy chilly day better for driving than hiking. Sunday looks to be the nicest so that's my kayak day. Which meant trying to do a bit of pictured rocks Saturday and maybe Monday so I could be near Munsing and the kayak outfitter. Woodland Park CG is in Grand Marais so I'm going to eat dinner on a restaurant.
A view, but not mine, from Woodland Park CG.
Mackinac Bridge and yes it was windy coming over.
A success for the morning. Finally stopped at a brewery that would fill my growlers. Dead Bear Brewery in Grayling MI.
North Higgins Lake. Clearing but still gray and breezy.
N Higgins Lake SP.
Decided to head north for the Michigan UP.
Long day driving. Harrison Lake SP on Ohio. Now to the decision point -- whether to go way north into Michigan or to continue on west from here.
Darien Lakes SP. I had thought to stay south of Seneca Falls at one of the parks with waterfalls. But decided it was time to get on farther west. So it was mostly an interstate day.
Water wall with Declaration of Sentiments
Women's Rights NP. Wesleyan Chapel.
Sunset by one of the docks
View from my site. It is startling how loud the boats and jet skis are.
The marsh that Grass Point is named for
Grass Point SP. decided to not travel far today. The Boldt Castle was abandoned partially completed when George Boldt's wife died. It is one of many mansions of the early 1900's on islands on the American side.
Alster Tower & Peristyle. Still on Boldt Castle premises
The glass dome from the 'outside'
Just boarded Clayton Island Tours boat for cruise to Boldt Castle. There are 1864 islands in the Thousand Islands
Long Point SP. on a peninsula facing a bay. Long drive to get here. A layover day for housekeeping, some letter writing, and maybe a bike ride and painting.
Islands in St Lawrence R.
I've passed several beautiful stone churches since I turned into NY. Finally stopped to admire one.
Leaving New England for what I'll call the Great Lake States.
This is a laundry stop but I am also irrationally pleased with the brownies ( from a mix) while I have power to run the microwave and the convection bake feature.
Goose Creek CG and marina. Still on Vermont but barely.
Burger and fries on Grand Isle in the middle of Lake Champlain
Mekkelsen RV. Folks are wonderful. Just finished fixing my fridge.
Little River History Hike. Except for the first one all of the photos so far are from a portion of this hike.
Cookstove is still there.
Goodwill house. Only still standing historic structure in area.
W Clossey house site. Finally occurred to what's missing compared to southeast sites - remnants of the chimney.
Interesting about the 'coffin trees' in the sign.
Imagine a white 2story clapboard house here.
Amazing quantity of rock moved & stacked.
Ezra Fuller farmhouse
Indian pipe. I've never seen so many in one place.
The cats are chasing up and down the length of the camper with tussling and snarling on the bunk and thunder as they thump down and race to the door.
Little River SP. interesting how similar the land use history here is to East Tennessee. Hard scrabble hill slope farms eventually flooded out by COE flood control projects.
Sunday River Brewing Co. Maine law does not allow for the filling of my growlers. Something about having to label them. And I thought I'd left odd liqueur laws behind.
It's a fuzzy photo of one of the two herons today. And I heard a loon
Yellow water lily
Webb Lake outlet
I have no idea what he's looking at but he is certainly alert.
Another view of Webb Lake
According to the Park info I'm on the western lakes and mountains region.
Snoopy girl. She just had to check the overhead bunk compartment
Rainy night. Good time to catch up on travel journal. And I have to admit I'm glad not to be in a tent.
Mt Blue State Park. Today is beginning of a new segment in this road trip - the turn west.
At the dock for the ferry back to Winter Harbor in an hour. And the barnacles are waiting for the tide to come in.

Back to the CG. Biked the loop road to Hwy 186 And got the shuttle the rest of the way. Love the shuttle.
Loosing approx N40E
Almost to Schoodic Head
Dark rocks at Schoodic Head are diabase dykes in the base granite. The diabase is softer.
Idyllic fantasies about a waterfront cottage,a dock, and a boat or two.
Schoodic Woods CG. Here for 5 nights. My plan is to use the shuttle buses and ferry for all exploring and not move the truck. And I'm letting the cats go naked for awhile. Mim has a wear spot from the buckle of her harness.
Schoodic Woods Entrance Station
That scent. Sun baked conifer with a sea breeze.
Penobscot Narrows Bridge
Camden Hills SP with layover days. This morning is cleaning day. Shake out and sun the bedding and rugs, vacuum the drifts of cat hair and litter. Attempt to rearrange into better order inside.
Another view of the harbor.
Yes I did. A beautiful pink scarlet silk skein.
Overlooking Camden and the Bay
Waiting for the tide to come in
Mim relaxed. Note interior decorating color coordination.
Horse Corner, Rockland
Service techs at Rockland Ford, ME graciously worked me into their schedule to do my 20,000 mi truck servicing. I've stoped in at almost every Ford dealer in the last 1000 mi to get this done.
Ice cream and laundry change from the camp store. Clean clothes and towels for another 10 days.
Sanford ME, Apache CG. His highness at his leisure.
Concord NH grocery stop
A lake at Woodford SP
Woodford SP, VT
Doing a day driving the interstate to get over to Vermont and the Green Mtns.
Ricketts Glen. Lake Julia
Ricketts Glen. Indian pipe?
Rickettsial Glen SP. One of many waterfalls on the Falls Trail. I didn't do the entire loop - inactivity and my knees strongly suggested not. I'll take my hiking sticks on my next exploratory.
Worlds End State Park. My first site near a creek. Loyalsock Creek. Went for a little dip in the creek. Light rain has cooled temps nicely
It was a rough day - protesting the truck ride, being on a leash, no roaming free.
One kitty takes to leash walking. The other doesn't yet.
Very nice visitors center. Sites Homestead has heirloom apples and historically accurate display garden.
Seneca Rock from Seneca Shadows CG
Cavitts Creek Park near Tazwell VA. After I set up I tried the screen door but had to catch Mim by the tail as she was half in half out.
Let me out!!!
Big Stone Gap
Lora Blevins farmstead
Bandy Ck bike trail
Bandy Ck CG. Big South Fork NRA.
Carson Cemetary. Momma's marker
