Amsterdam - last night

Only 23 miles and hotel had room ready at 12 so an excellent opportunity to visit the city .

The hardest part today was getting past the falling trees across the cycle tracks.

Cycling through Amsterdam was easy.

Muiden - another gem

Short day today . Only 23 miles or do and time wasting on route . Why not have a beer ....

Day 5 - Huizen

Another wet one , but at least we arrived blowed dried by the wind .

Train journey excitement over ..

Huizen is a delightful place and the hotel we can't fault .

Lovely view from hotel window .

At least paul kept his helmet on

Tuesday 28 Jul 2015 13:38

Yes after another drowning and a horrible headwind we jumped the train .

Partly also to sample Dutch trains and cycles . Shocked at getting marched down the train by the guard and giving a lecture for not removing the panniers .... Safety talk over and transferred to second train.

No ticket checks on either train !!!i had paid the €45 euros honest

Tuesday 28 Jul 2015 10:43

Oh dear it's all westward today and into the wind . Only 10 mile in and the town of Elberg has stopped us for a coffee !!

The plan might change soon and you might see the bike on a train

Monday 27 Jul 2015 15:53

Day 5 - Kampen

41 miles , not fast but horrible weather lots of trees down on route with the storms .

Just arrived at hotel Van Dyke and brought bikes inside hotel just seconds before the heavens opened again .

Monday 27 Jul 2015 14:40

And the sun came out .... Just !!

Lovely little cafe in the route , the owner asked where we were on the Saturday during the storm ?? The worse summer storm for 100 years she said

Rest on a ferry

Rain has stopped ☔️☔️☔️

Monday 27 Jul 2015 11:24

Half way ... The rain is bouncing and the places still look nice . Just cycled through or are still in a national park absolutely fantastic . Must come back in the dry .

Nicely sitting outside under heaters

Saturday 25 Jul 2015 14:03

Day 3 - Lemmer

A slow 30 miles into the bad wind . By now we had also had a good washing . Under 10 mph average is not good . Pleased the bad wind was on our short day .

The hotel is excellent , a mini apartment and whirlpool bath and 2 nights , what a joy .

Half way now and the tour is getting better lovely places ..

The bad weather that was forecast and later revised to 4pm did arrive ... Wind at 55mph gusts and rain to complement ☔️☔️

Posted: July 25, 2015, 12:03 p.m.

Saturday 25 Jul 2015 11:02

Oh dear only 10 miles complete , this is hard work . Down to 6mph at one point into to wind . At least no rain yet !!

Been through a few lovely locations already today .

Saturday 25 Jul 2015 9:30

After a great night on the square and paul doing enough miles on the borrowed bike to make it 100km it was breakfast and off on what was supposed to be our easy day of 30 miles .

However the weather would put an end to that ... Although not as bad as forecast we left in the dry .

Friday 24 Jul 2015 18:37

Day 2 done - 59 mile and not much height .

Not a bad run , started off well through the sand dunes ( great path) to Den Helder and southwards and westward to Den Oever and a great fish and chip lunch before tackling the dyke road 30km and not a kink . Shame the wind was a head wind with the odd spot of rain , still better than pure sunshine .

Makkum a small town on route to tonight's stop at Workum provided a lovely beer in the square on a busy market day. A lovely to visit again spot . Now only 6 miles left to do .

Workum also has lovely feel about it with a nice hotel spot on in the middle of the main square .

And then Paul borrowed a bike !!!

Friday 24 Jul 2015 14:17

Halfway across the Afsluitdijk

A dyke that runs 30km and the wind was against us !!!

The dyke created a fresh water lake which must be the biggest in Europe .

Friday 24 Jul 2015 9:50

Lands End .... A great run to here , Den Helder . Next time ? I think I would take a ferry from here to the island of Texel.

Posted: July 24, 2015, 7:50 a.m.

Thursday 23 Jul 2015 18:43

Day 1 complete - 40.5 miles and in hotel for 4pm after a nice days ride .

The cycle ways are fantastic and the amount of cyclists unbelievable. I'm guessing that as today's ride was along the coast and in the peak holiday season this was mainly holiday makers like ourselves .

The town of Callantscoog is tonight's choice nice spot very busy and only the name of the hotel left us with doubts "Badhotel"

The hotel parrot not the friendliest I've come across !!

Posted: July 23, 2015, 4:43 p.m.

Thursday 23 Jul 2015 13:46

Half way and lunch with a beech view .

Going well perfect conditions

Posted: July 23, 2015, 11:46 a.m.

Thursday 23 Jul 2015 9:13

Day 1 - after all these months of planning this was it .

Anyway blue sky's awaited as we waited for the ferry to dock and to sample the ride ahead.

My initial thoughts of a shopping free trip (can't carry anymore ) didn't last just a workaround was found . Paul bought a jacket and arranged for it to be transferred onto the ferry for collection on our return .

Posted: July 23, 2015, 7:13 a.m.

Wednesday 22 Jul 2015 17:15

The send off committee !!

A good turn out from the Badcock family on the sand , Dave Jen and grandchildren Molly and Erin plus others my eyes couldn't reach .

Then on the groin it was mam and dad . The weather was nice and a good crowd had gathered to see the departure . Including a group of lads who decided to do a group moon

Wednesday 22 Jul 2015 13:17

The journey begins ... Ready to board the Shields ferry . Nice and early so time for lunch at North Shields fish quay .

What a job to get this far , pack unpack pack again this in this out

A £50 bell? £70 waterproof shorts. Getting more and more like me! Enjoy the voyage.

Them shorts ☔️☔️☔️don't keep the bottom bit dry !! I wondered if they worked ??

Well you have a the right gear including 'waterproof shorts'! I knew they'd come in handy. Enjoy.

Or should I say coffee and cake ride as opposed to flower sniffing?

Enjoy the ride, it's definitely not a race, what I call a 'Flower Sniffing' ride.
