Here’s our last night in Iceland! We are staying in the heart of downtown Reykjavík at Sandhotel. This place is apparently considered part of “Small Luxury Hotels of the World”. We had to go through a little alley behind shows to find this oasis.

Almost to the end of the “ring road” which is the highway that goes around the whole island. That’s what we’ve been following this whole trip. Beautiful Mountain landscape beside an icy body of water. We’ve seen a lot of that this trip.

These power lines got for miles and miles up here in the north. We are pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

We have reached the second biggest city in Iceland, Akureyri. We took a quick pit stop in their mall and this is their Apple store! Only 1 employee, no flair, and an iPhone X costs about $1,800! 😳

Dimmuborgir is a place full of volcanic rock formations. We only got to explore a small section before the sun went down but some of the ones further into the park get pretty big and elaborate. And just look at how deep that snow is.

Thursday 4 Jan 2018 15:11

Tonight we are staying at the Vogafjos Farm Resort. They have cute cabins to stay in and a restaurant where you can look out the window at their cows being fed and milked. Interesting place.

This is the Krafla Power Station in Myvatn. It uses geothermal energy to create power for Iceland. It stinks SOOOOO bad of rotten eggs, hence the facial expression.

Gas is $1.98 per liter.... but there’s 3.79 liters in a gallon... so to fill our tank 3/4 of the way it cost over $60 😑

Sunday 31 Dec 2017 13:03

We started our New Year’s Eve off with a morning snorkel. It was by far the most miserable cold I’ve ever endured but such a cool experience. The silfra is the crack that is formed under water by the North American and Eurasian tech tonic plates pulling apart! The water is fresh, pure and extremely clear. The visibility down into the trench is about 150m. To give perspective, visibility in tropical waters is about 35m at its best.

Dinner at Grillmarkadurrin. We did the sampler pre fix menu. 1. Duck salad with mandarin, spinach and pomegranate seeds 2. Minke Whale with Icelandic wasabi and soy sauce 3. Arctic Char Fish marinated in beets with gingerbread crumble and Ikura 4. Atlantic Cod on a bed of green apple purée with green apple spirals on top 5. Goose and pork belly with idk what on top 6. Rack of Lamb and garlic potatoes with peanuts 7. All the most amazing desserts including coconut ice cream and a chocolate ball that was melted by pouring hot caramel on top to reveal a center of coffee ice cream with chocolate rice crispy pieces. 8. Random fact-all water is taken from the tap here and it’s actually good

Not pictured cuz we ate too fast: Fried squid and dried fish.

Saturday 30 Dec 2017 15:34

Stop 5 of Golden Circle: Geyser park where there are holes in the ground that shoot scalding hot water (80 to 100 degrees Celsius) hundreds of feet into the air. They are hard to predict so I didn’t get any good pics but here’s us by a non-shooting one lol.
