The nine-state door-to-door Bike Around ARKansas (BAARK)--Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois--that is, a circumnavigation of Arkansas without rolling a wheel into the state.

Saturday 13 Jun 2015 17:17

Here's a shoutout to the friends and strangers in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, all of whom added wonder to the BAARK. I have much to pay forward. After nearly 1300 miles on the bike and 290 miles short of home, the bike is beyond my repair. Early tomorrow, the bike and I, without entering Arkansas, will ceremoniously close the BAARK by jeeping home with a wag between our tail.

Thursday 28 May 2015 14:19

The heavy thunderstorms here in eastern Oklahoma have caused the state parks south of Wilburton to close due to flooding. The storms have also caused me to stop far short of my daily mileage and to check into a hotel. Tonight the weather is to begin clearing, and tomorrow I'll try to make up some miles.

Posted: May 28, 2015, 1:39 p.m.

Wednesday 27 May 2015 20:08

The road to Robbers Cave State Camp was hot and hilly. I feel especially good for tackling the hills. I feel even better for having met two great people. Stuart saw me sitting beside OK HWY 2 and stopped to see if I was ok. We ended up talking about bikes as I drank a super cold Gatorade that he gave me from the back of his truck. John walked up to my camp after I had showered and gave me two delicious tacos that his wife made for me. After we talked about biking and running--he and his wife compete on triathlons--I pretty much swallowed the tacos whole. Yum! All is well.

Sunday 24 May 2015 18:35

Having worn the same set of bike clothes for eight days and my rain gear for four days, I guess it's time for a wash. Also, fellow bikers: if you're here in Miami, OK, and all of the parks or other camp sites are either under water or under a flash flood warning, consider this Econo Lodge. Though it looks cheap--well, a room is in fact inexpensive--it's as good as anything twice the cost.
